Baltimore-based composer and cellist Robert Karpay is known for wearing many different hats. He has written solo, chamber and orchestral works, focusing on ephemeral and emotionally charged moments. Then he has written scores for lighthearted and fun 90’s-style video games: think Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis, with modern production techniques. In the past few years though, he has focused on creating vast void like abyssal soundscapes. He has collaborated with instrumentalists, videographers and other producers, placing his cello playing in center stage. You can hear this in works such as “Shed”, “Agnostic Kaddish”, and in the Rome Movie Awards and Berlin Indie Film Festival-winning score, “Vivid Dreams”. Through working in sound design at Audio UX, emphasis has shifted from the macro to the micro. Robert’s work in product sounds for various big name brands can be heard in devices and machines all over the city and even the world; self-checkouts, smart and eco-friendly automobiles, meditation and sleep apps, and all sorts of sonic logos and branded videos.

He studied and earned his BM and MM at Manhattan School of Music. He primarily studied composition with Richard Danielpour, Nils Vigeland, Reiko Feuting, and J. Mark Stambaugh. He studied piano with Marjean Olson.

NYC-based menswear designers Abdul Abasi and Greg Rosborough asked me to compose original music and sound design for a video promoting their “In Plain Sight” campaign.
